Saas Fee Ski Instructor Course – Week 1

Arrivals day on our Saas Fee Ski Instructor Course is an exciting time for the Peak Leaders trainees. After a short flight to either Geneva or Zurich the trainees take a train and bus ride up to Saas Fee; it’s a beautiful journey with lots of breath-taking scenery. Once off the bus the norm is for trainees to have a quick stretch then marvel at the view of the enormous mountain and glacier that tower over the town. No matter how many times you make this journey it always has the same effect!

There are some big old mountains around Saas Fee!

As with previous years this Peak Leaders course is based at the Park Hotel; which is in the centre of the village only a short walk to the lift. As no cars are allowed in the centre of Saas Fee the only way to get around is by foot or by the small electric vehicles. This highlights the fact that it’s really important to live nice and close to the centre of town and only a short walk from the lifts.

Not exactly slumming-it with this accommodation

For their first day on the hill trainees were greeted by blue sky and some beautiful fresh snow; perfect conditions for the trainees to get their skiing legs back after a long and damp summer sat indoors crying!

Julian and Loz hard at work…

Coaches Loz and Julian have been training trainee instructors for many years and have trained a comprehensive alumni of well-known and highly-regarded instructors in the past! There is no doubting that this years trainees are in safe hands and are benefiting from first-class training.

As with many of Peak Leaders courses the trainees out in Saas Fee have come from a wide range of backgrounds; this year we have an Estate Agent (no booing please), graduates, people taking a gap year and people who genuinely want a long-term career in snowsports. We even have one former member of the Household Cavalry- you should see how shiny his ski boots are every morning- (Paul I’m only joking!)

This week the training has been focused on improving body posture; getting the correct position on the skis and being ready for the BASI (British Association of Snowsport Instructors) level 1 exam.

Theo was skiing so fast his forearms fell off.

The group are sharing the glacier with ski teams from all over the world including Great Britain’s Number one female skier Chemmy Alcott.

After 5 days of skiing the group had a relaxing weekend off.  Having taken a tour of the Saas Fee nightlife most of the group had a very chilled out Saturday and went skiing on Sunday in the fresh snow

If you thought pre-season skiing was bad……..think again!

The beauty of Saas Fee at this time of year is that you can get fresh tracks in the morning and sit in the sun having a BBQ in the afternoon.

Well it wouldn’t be a ski holiday without a BBQ……would it?

Anyway, before the next update there were a few burning questions left from week 1 of the course:

Is it really only a week until the Level 1?

Will Sam remain unbeaten at table tennis?

Does Kristian (Bosh) know every single line from The Office?

Does Fergus know everyone in Saas Fee?!

Why is Serena called Poppy?

To be continued………..

This years crew!
