VERBIER 2017/18 – WEEK 1

Week 1

What a start to the season! Record amounts of snow in Verbier and freezing temperatures so early should ensure much of the resort has an excellent base all season. Peak Leaders 2017/8 is off to a flyer even before it has begun. The conditions for skiing and learning should be amazing.

The trainees all arrived on the weekend and soon went on an orientation around Verbier to get to know the place where they will spend the next 10 weeks. For their first test the team had to quickly come together and help out a Swiss white van man who was stuck in the snow!

But then it was down to the serious business of starting to ski, getting to know the resort, everyone else on the course and getting to know the coaches. Each day the Peak Leaders meet the coaches at the Medran lift to get an early lift and take advantage of the amazing conditions.

There is a lot to do on a Peak Leaders course. Training for ski exams obviously but also getting to know loads of new people, the town itself and taking in the amazing scenery. Verbier certainly has a lot of that!

As well as skiing, each group has dryland training with Jake each week. It’s important that the trainees are fit and strong for the course so that they can get the most out of it. There’s no point being good enough at skiing to pass but so unfit you can’t perform consistently. So fitness is taken very seriously.

It’s a festive time of year in most places and Verbier is no different. Ski resorts are one of the best places in the world to spend Christmas and a bucket load of snow certainly helps! Christmas trees definitely looks better with lots of snow on them!

So week 1 flew by as always, there’s loads of new information to learn, loads of new people to meet and lots of terrain to ski! It just remains to say thanks to the two coaches, Andy and Will, who trained the groups this week and did an excellent job.
