In Canada there is a huge demand for instructors to teach beginners due to the size of the resorts and the number of people who go ski. Please note that although we do not guarantee a job offer in ski school, the course leader is there to advise and help you with both general personal development and specifics about ski school applications and networking. Ultimately, however, it will be up to you to secure your job for the rest of the season if you choose the pre-Christmas course. From previous years, we have found there are plenty of jobs to be had. If you would like to work in Canada you must obtain a work visa before you leave the UK. If you choose the Spring course, you can opt to head to New Zealand or Australia to wirk for the Southern Hemisphere winter which starts in June.
Carriers which fly from the UK include British Airways, Fly Zoom and Air Canada. NB BEWARE! Check the luggage allowance before you book, bearing in mind that ski / board gear alone can weight up to 15 kgs. Charges for excess luggage can be extreme, with some carriers charging high fees per kilo extra. Remember that ski / board gear alone can weight around 15 kgs.
If you are planning to apply to Whistler ski / board school after you have finished the Peakleaders course, and you are a British citizen, you must make sure that you get a Canadian work visa as early as possible. There are limited numbers available and are done on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to work in Canada after the course you must obtain a work visa before you leave the UK. Apply well in advance of departure (as early as January) to ensure your success through the BUNAC Work Canada scheme. It is a relatively easy process with work visas coming under 2 categories: student and non – student. For more info go to bunac.org.uk
Once you have this arranged, employment is then a legal option with Intrawest ski school upon selection and successfully passing your Level 1 (and 2) qualifications. To increase your chances of employment, please call us or talk to your course leader.

Canada 04
I was 32 years of age and bored to death with the 9 to 5 lifestyle; needed to feel alive again and the plan was to take a season out of work and be a ski bum for a year. Whilst looking through a ski magazine trying to get up to date on what skies I should be looking for I came across an ad for Peak Leaders’ which caught my eye. So why bum in France for a year when I could go to Canada and become a ski instructor. After a couple of calls to Dave and Annie of Peak Leaders I was booked.
With out a doubt it was the best decision I had ever made. Thanks to Dave and Annie I have made some great friends who I will all ways stay in touch with, from traveling around South America, teaching skiing at the same hill, sailing around the Greek islands or just meeting up in London for drinks and to remains about the 9 weeks we spent together. I came away with my level 2 ski instructor, avalanche awareness, back country training I have to say was the highlight of the trip for me, first aid and the most memorable 9 weeks of my life.
To date (Nov 05) this is the start of my second season teaching in Canada. I am now a level 3 CSIA ski instructor and a Level 1 CASI snowboard instructor, (yes, the dark side my friends.) So for the next five months I’ll be sliding down a hill on a tray or I’ll have two planks strap-ed to my feet. I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful sport and I intend to carry on teaching each winter for a long time. I hope this little letter may help some of you come to a decision to sign up to Peak Leaders and have the time of your lives. If I can help answer any questions you may want to ask being some one who has done the course I would be more than happy to (mikekindred2004@yahoo.co.uk) or just to say hi that's cool.
