Bike Park Academy: We are rolling in Whistler…

This weekend our Whistler Bike Park Academy course rolled into action. We’re stoked to have such an awesome crew and will keep you updated on the happenings. Meanwhile, you’ve still time to get onto the Coaches Camp … here’s what to expect.

30 Hours (or more) Per Week Coaching

Getting to ride each day in Whistler Mountain Bike Park with top coaches makes all the difference. Practice sessions are structured so you get the most out of the day. All the theory and teaching methodologies you’ll need for the exams are covered. Some sessions happen indoors when it is more talk than ride that’s needed. And everyone loves seeing their progress on video, especially over a cold refreshment (or two!).

IDP Level 1 & 2

The Instructor Development Program (IDP) is the one of the world’s premier mountain bike coaching programs developed by Terramethod. Tom Radke and Mike Johnstone, two Whistler Mountain Bike Park legends, founded Terramethod to fill the gap for professional mountain bike park instruction. On the courses, IDP levels 1 & 2, you learn how to teach in a safe, fun and progressive manner. A 3-day and 4-day course respectively, you need to show coaching skills ranging from teaching beginners the fundamentals thru to more advanced techniques for higher-speed cornering and jumps.

CTC Trail Leaders Award

CTC is the UK’s National Cyclists’ Charity and provides courses and qualifications. Developed with the UK market in mind, the CTC qualification is in demand from employers in Europe, Egypt, Canada and other areas of the world. The Trail Leader Award tests you on group management, ride preparation and risk assessment, developing your groups skills and even understanding UK access rights for mountain bikers.

First Aid Course

If you want to be a guide/instructor/coach then you’ll need a first aid certificate. Being confident in dealing with anything the trail throws at your students, or you, makes for safer riding. An accident may never happen but it’s good to know you’re prepared if it does.

Crankworx Festival

Scheduled this year from the 7-16 August, if you don’t know what Crankworx is… where have you been? Bringing together the globe’s best downhill, slopestyle and enduro riders, plus just about everyone else in the mountain bike industry, Crankworx is now a world tour that visits Rotorua in New Zealand, Les Deux Alpes in France and finishes in its Canadian home base of Whistler. And you’ll be there in the middle of the madness. Awesome times and amazing riding you’ll not forget!
