BARILOCHE 2019 – WEEK 5

So now it’s on to the business end of the Peak Leaders Argentina course!

BASI examiner James Bennet arrived on the weekend and he is here to train and assess the group over the next four weeks.

Like any BASI exam, James is here to examine but also to coach and help the group as much as possible to improve both their own technical skiing and develop each person’s understanding so that they can deliver high quality lessons.

And, once again, Cerro Catedral is the perfect place for the Peak Leaders to practice!

Conditions during the week have been changeable but dealing with that is one of the many skills that the trainees have to learn quickly if they want to be a ski instructor. Getting used to working in an outdoor environment that can be sunny and still one minute and windy and snowy the next is a vital part of the job!

For a couple of days the clouds did come in and the Peak Leaders had to work hard to stay focused so that they could improve their own skiing and concentrate on the best way to teach lessons.

However massive snowfalls and cloudy days hopefully mean that the reward of a bluebird powder day is soon on it’s way!

The BASI exams are tough and that is why the Peak Leaders have four weeks of extensive training running up to them. The trainees need to be focused on themselves and it’s vitally important that they are open to new ideas of how they can improve their technical and teaching skills.

As always the BASI level 1 is a testing and tiring but ultimately rewarding week.

Whether you pass or fail the exam your understanding of skiing and how to implement that will definitely improve. Well done to all the Peak Leaders for completing the course.

Next week the Peak Leaders team are training with James and they have a fantastic opportunity to learn from a vastly experienced and skilful coach as they build towards their BASI level 2 exam.

As well as skiing steeper slopes the trainees have to ski variable (off piste) snow and navigate the bumps.

So there’s lots to do, lots to learn and as always on this course next week will be full on!
