WHY TAKE A SKI INSTRUCTOR TRAINING COURSE?

Why become a ski instructor group shot

WHY BOOK ON A PEAK LEADERS COURSE?

WHAT IF YOU DON’T TEACH?
AND WHAT’S THE BENEFIT IF YOU DO?

Why train as a ski instructor? And why choose the BASI pathway?

Two good questions and ones we have been asked a lot – after all what’s the benefit if you don’t want to make this your career?

Well, here’s our answer…

SO, WHY BOOK A COURSE?

If nothing else, joining a ski instructor training course is your gateway into one of the best, most enviable lifestyles out there.

A winter season is an amazing experience – one you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Never mind getting a job as a ski instructor, the training is amazing.

Your daily commute is catching the bubble up the mountain, you get up early and enjoy perfect corduroy pistes and ski all day.

You will change your skiing, becoming stronger and more confident and taking your technique to the next level – thanks to our team of expert coaches.

Then at the end of the day you can meet your friends in apres ski and enjoy the other side of the mountain lifestyle.

WHAT ABOUT THE WORK?

This is the best job in the world.

It’s a big claim – but we mean every word.

Becoming a ski teacher means you get to enjoy a sport you love and get paid for it.

You meet new and interesting clients everyday and you get to see them learn and improve, helping them achieve things they never expected to achieve. That’s why our trainees always seem to enjoy teaching far, far more than they expected. It’s a really rewarding experience.

And the view from the office is pretty stunning, too…

So if you’re looking to work on your GAP course, starting your shift at 3’000 meters and spending your entire day skiing seems a pretty good option.

But that’s not all – when you have time off you get to go free-skiing with friends, explore the huge 4 Valleys terrain and make the most of fresh powder snow.

You can head to the snow park to learn new tricks, perfect your technique on piste or just cruise around with mates.

AND WHAT IF YOU DON’T TEACH?

Of course, not everyone who trains as an instructor plans to teach. So, what it’s like if you don’t want a career in the mountains?

Well, it doesn’t mean you can’t get an enormous amount out of the experience and the training.

As part of your instructor training you will develop really important transferable skills – skills that are highly-valued in any workplace.

As a ski instructor you will become a very clear communicator, the job is all about making complex things sound simple and digestible – you’re constantly learning to present information in a way that you have tailored to your clients way of learning.

You also learn to become a leader, managing groups and taking responsibility for others.

The qualifications also look great on any CV and are a massive bonus when you find yourself in an interview talking about what makes you different from the other applicants…

HOW DO THE BASI EXAMS HELP?

On a Peak Leaders instructor training course you’ll also take your qualifications with the British Association of Snowsports Instructors (BASI).

Naturally these qualifications are recognised globally and great for getting a job as a ski instructor. But that’s not all.

BASI have aligned with the University of Edinburgh, so they are part of the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) and also the European Qualification Framework (EQF).

As a result your exams can count towards further education.

You will usually take both the BASI 1 and 2 exams on your course – these are equivalent to SCQF level 6 and 7 respectively.

So you can actually use the qualifications as credits towards other courses – and BASI are busy trying to extend these options to transfer credits in other educational systems in the future.

Whats more, if you were to continue on to train for your BASI Level 3 and level 4, you are training for a qualification that’s equivalent to the level of a university degree!
